A Noble Prelude: Before the Marbella Club

Marbella’s transformation into a jet-set haven began even earlier than Prince Alfonso’s arrival. In the 1930s and 40s, Ricardo Soriano, Marquis of Ivanrey, was among the first to recognise the area’s potential. He purchased land in what is now known as the Golden Mile and opened one of the first countryside retreats in Marbella. His influence laid the groundwork for the town’s elite reputation, attracting Spain’s upper class and sowing the seeds of luxury tourism.

A Royal Beginning: Prince Alfonso and the Marbella Club

The story begins in the 1940s when German aristocrat Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe discovered a charming finca during a family trip to southern Spain. Enchanted by the area, he purchased the land and transformed it into what would become the iconic Marbella Club Hotel. Opened in 1954, it attracted his circle of aristocratic and Hollywood friends, establishing Marbella as a sophisticated haven.

Among his first illustrious guests was the Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII, who visited Marbella during his years of continental exile. This early royal presence helped cement the town’s elite image and drew further high society interest.

Princess Grace and Prince Rainier: Monaco’s Royal Presence in Marbella

Long before Princess Diana’s visits, Princess Grace and Prince Rainier III of Monaco were regular guests on the Costa del Sol. In August 1970, the royal couple attended the opening of Puerto Banús, bringing a touch of Mediterranean glamour that helped establish Marbella as an international elite retreat .

This visit is a testament to Marbella’s allure for European royals—Grimaldis and Windsors alike—who were drawn to the region’s understated luxury, scenic beauty, and affluent social scene.

Saudi Royalty: Investment and Influence

In the 1970s and 80s, Marbella’s appeal broadened even further when King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and his brother, now King Salman, began acquiring land in the area. They constructed lavish palaces, private mosques, and other facilities that significantly boosted the local economy. Their continued investment and presence have made Marbella a favourite retreat for the Saudi royal family, whose members regularly entrust Cilo Marbella to arrange their high-end accommodation and services.

Today, royalty from across the UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait also favour Marbella for its blend of privacy and prestige, making it one of the most secure and sought-after destinations in Europe.

Princess Diana’s Marbella Getaways

One of the most beloved figures in recent royal history, Princess Diana, brought renewed British royal attention to Marbella in the early 1990s. Her first visit saw her staying at the celebrated Hotel Byblos (now La Zambra) in nearby Mijas. She later returned with her children, Princes William and Harry, to stay at the private Marbella villa of her close friend, Lady Annabel Goldsmith—a property now available for rent through Cilo Marbella.

Diana’s visits captured international media attention, but she chose Marbella specifically for its understated luxury and seclusion, echoing her preference for elegance without excess.

Queen Queen Sofía of Spain and Royal Companions

Spain’s beloved Queen Sofía—mother of King Felipe VI—has long enjoyed discreet visits to Marbella and the Costa del Sol. In July 2022, she was seen attending a concert in Puerto Banús alongside her sister, Princess Irene of Greece, and her close friend Queen Noor of Jordan. Their visit reflects Marbella’s enduring reputation as a serene and elegant retreat for European and Middle Eastern royalty alike.
